When Suyuan was a young woman, her first husband moved her and their two babies to the city of Kweilin to keep them safe from the encroaching Japanese. Suyuan says that the Japanese were about to march on Kweilin, and her husband sent a messenger, asking her to move to Chungking.She goes carrying her twin banies and belongings. She makes it to Chungking with only some dresses. Her mother goes on to tell Jing-mei is not those twin babies, and that Jing-mei’s father is not the husband in Chungking.
