The main conflict of the story is Jing-mei’s feeling of responsibility to fulfill her mother's dying wish. Suyuan’s greatest desire was to be reunited with her twin daughters, but she dies before doing so. Thus, it's up to her daughter to travel to China, meet her sisters, and inform them of their mother's death. The sisters are not drawn into Jing-mei’s conflict...... in fact, the second they meet the conflict disappears.
