One theme addressed in the first act is marriage. We become aware of Algernon's abhorence for the state of married, as well as Jack's desire to become engaged.

Another theme addressed in the first act is that of "class". Wilde immediately addresses this theme in the interaction between Algernon and Lane (the butler).
