Deborah never knew what happened to her mother and didn't understand her mysterious disappearance (death). While living with her mother's cousin Ethel, Deborah and her siblings were provided with little food and forced to work like slaves. Deborah was also sexually abused by Galen (Ethel's husband), which she kept secret.
