The Hunger Games

why do the tributes have make-up artists and dress up for the opening ceremony?

Does this ceremony remind you f the evenets in our world, either past or present? compare those ceremonies in real life to the one in the story.

The tributes want sponsors to support them in the games. They try to make an impression so they can be sent things during the battle. I suppose, in the world of athletics, it pays to be charismatic and stand out from the others. Advertisers like popular athletes because they sell their brand.
