what is the difference between the judge and the colonel's religious beliefs

I don't know that they were really that different.The Colonel was actually a Puritan clergymen but both these guys were respected for their religious beliefs. The Judge figured the richer he was, the more God would save him. I'm not sure the Colonel shared this extreme view. Both however felt no guilt in ruining others' lives. They even took on a "godly" defence to it.
