I don't see Pepe being a victim of capitalism. Pepe may have, in part at least, been interested in Angustius for her inheritance. The exchange of money was part of marriage unions. Pepe finally having an affair with Adela may have actually have been a passion/ love thing. In that sense,if one values such things, could be justification.
