The Hobbit

What other stories can you think of where the antagonist (baddies) are done in by their own greed and appetites?

In chapter nine, the dwarves are imprisoned by elves. The elves eventually get drunk and Biblo is able to help them escape inside the empty wine barrels. This reminds me of Homer's Odyssey where the men are trapped in Polyphemus cave and the cyclops is eating them one by one. Odysseus tricks the monster into getting drunk, pokes his eye out and the men escape by clining to sheep.

"baddies" getting what they deserve is a pretty common theme in literature. Your example works well. Faustus also is a favourite story of mine with this theme. (although God saves him in the end). Macbeth is another one.
