The role of women in this society is to be submissive and slave-like to a hardened patriarchal culture. Women are objectified into commodities depending on how they can serve male society. Child bearing women (handmaids) are coveted. They are given special protections and comforts because of their potential to breed. Other women are servants, cleaners, prostitutes...The dehumanization of women is validated through pseudo- religious practices. These "traditions" are a form of brainwashing the women themselves to accept their given roles. Punishment for not conforming involved gang rape, whipping with steel cables, and emotional segregation.
