Why are Gatsby's books symbolic, and what are they symbolic of?

Gatsby's books represent the false face he presents to the world. The persona he presents is a fabrication, and the books in his library have never been opened. The books in his library are as much an illusion as his life, and although their presence makes him seem well educated and well read..... a close inspection reveals they are just another prop to make his lies more believable.
