Nick has grown up in the Midwest with Midwestern values. He comes from money, but he is not a member of the "monied" aristocracy. Nick has seen the best of both worlds, and yet he is not impressed or jaded by the people around him. Nick also tries to reserve judgement, just as his father advised him to.
