Nick judges that Gatsby stands in stark contrast to the sinister gossip he has heard about him. Gatsby is young and handsome, with a beautiful smile that seems to radiate hope and optimism. Nick falls instantly in love with Gatsby's smile, remarking that it has "a quality of eternal reassurance in it." Gatsby's innate hopefulness is contagious. From these opening observations we see that Nick decidedly judges people more from what they radiate from the inside than from what they show on the outside. He looks deeper than the money, the parties and the opulence. He's looking for the man behind the smile.
