Consider the recklessness and carelessness of the major characters in the end chapters. The drunken parties, the violent fights, and car accidents. It is Daisy who recklessnessly ran over Myrtle which then translated to Gatsby being killed by Myrtle's husband. All the events leading up to this reflect the chaos and negativity of the characters involved. I don't know whether it is the time period to blame rather than the reckless excess of the characters.
