Daisy accepted Tom Buchanan's proposal of marriage while Gatsby was still away at war. The night before her wedding, Daisy suddenly realized the enormity of her mistake; she became hysterical and drank herself into a stupor. During that time, women were expected to be suitably married by a certain age, and they were expected to marry within their own social circles. Daisy married Tom because to not have done so would have dishonored her family.
