The Grapes of Wrath

Why is it so significant that Tom comes upon a snake just as the Joads first see California, "the Vally golden & green before them?"

Tom runs into rattle snake while getting to the promissed land (California). This of course has allusions to the Old Testement Garden of Eden story. The snake foreshadows that California will not be the Eden they think it will be.
