What is ironic about the fact that the torrential rains and the floods they bring cause so much sickness and death among the migrants in this chapter?

It's ironic because the Joads have gone to a plantation to work but the crop has already been picked. They left the relative security of the government camp because they wanted to be productive. On top of that the rains come down and punish them further.
