 The major problem in this story is that nobody takes responsibility for what happens to the farmers. The banks and large companies of agribusiness loom over the tenant farmers. The farmers are kicked of the land and the reasons why are lost in the perpetual chain of "big money."  Steinbeck wanted to underscore the ravages of capitalism unchecked on the poor who have no power.
