This is a thematic question that needs a lot of detail. I can make a general comment though. The "Oakies" were mainly tenant farmers or sharecroppers but they had a connection to the land they worked on. The land was their identity and farming it was their purpose. Gender roles revolved around farming. When they were kicked off the land, men felt emasculated and useless. Women, like Ma Joad, had to step up and take control of the family unit. .
