The women conform to stereotypes by insisting Tom act as the family breadwinner. In addition, Amanda tells her son that she'll allow him to leave if he can find a husband for his sister, so that Laura will be cared for financially.

As for breaking the stereotypes, we also see Amanda encouraging her daughter to go to school, to learn something (in this case business courses) that will allow her to take care of herself.
