Why would Jeannette's parents rather live on the street then find a job and get money to buy the things they need?

Jeannette saved money up to move to New York in order to get away from the chaos of her parents house. Well, they don't actually have a house after they decide to live homeless. It seems they like getting free stuff! Yes her parents enjoy rooting through garbage and getting stuff for free rather than working.
