Jeannette and her brother and sisters are almost always forgiving their irresponsible parents. I think this forgiveness changes through the novel. As kids, they often do not know any better. They are simply parents despite their shortcomings. As adults Jeannette and her siblings forgive to a point. I think they understand the reality that was their past and the profoundly flawed people that their parents are. In this sense they come to terms with life and their past.
