The argument definitely stems from the fact that Rose Mary had the ability to truly take care of her children readily available refused to take advantage of it because it was important that the land stay in the family. Note.... the family, particularly the children could do without, but the "family" had to hold onto the land at the expense of everything else.

"... instead of answering me, she kept repeating that it was important to keep Uncle Jim's land—land that had belonged to her father and his father and his father before that—in the family."
