The novel does not suggest one way of dealing with grief is better than others, but rather, illustrates the different way in which people do cope. Sometimes people cope with pain in unhealthy ways. Van Houten, for example, tries to drink away his pain. Augustus hides his pain behind a mask. Hazel and her mom, on the other hand, cope by meeting pain head on..... by using their pain, as difficult as it is, to creat something good.
