Why does the narrator consider it a "childish experiment" to look down into the tarn?

Looking down in the tarn was something a child might do because of insatiable curiosity..... looking for reasons to be afraid. Unfortunately, looking didn't calm our narrator's fears and only served to increase his fantasies about the mansion.
