The Haunted Palace” and “Mad Trist” by Sir Launcelot Canning was actually Poe's own composition. Both poems parallel foreshadow “The Fall of the House of Usher.” “Mad Trist,” is about the forceful entrance of Ethelred into the dwelling of a hermit. It mirrors the escape of Madeline from her death-tomb. Usher's obsession with the apocalyptic stories parallels the apocalypse of himself and his house.
