Money is central to the narrative of Merchant of Venice. The plot depends on Antonio owing money the Shylock the Jewish moneylender. Much of the money conflicts surround the apparent differences and irony between Christians and Jews. Jews are careful but Greedy: Christians are careless but giving. Shakespeare calls these stereotypes into question.
