The narrator is an unnamed, older gentleman, who is present at Bendey's (the restaurant). The narrator speaks in the third-person, using an objective narration, as he is not aware of the inner feelings of the other characters. The older gentleman is dining in the same restaurant. We are told is that he is privy to both the conversations of the young couple, as well as the Japanese gentlemen, and that he is sitting near the young couple's table "with the Japanese gentlemen between us". The narrator is also quite knowledgeable about publishing and English society. Like the young girl, the narrator is an author.
