Anne Frank once wrote β€œThe reason for my starting a diary is that I have no real friend.” She received her diary on her thirteenth birthday and she started calling it 'Kitty'. This was the year 1942.It is important to remember that Anne was just a teenage girl. She had all the angst and emotional conflicts of any adolescent girls. THese conflicts were just magnified in the annex. The annex was so small and confining Anne had no room to grow on her own, she had no privacy. Anne could not escape and go for a walk or see a friend when a conflict happened. There was no space between Anne and her mother or even cranky old Mr. Dussel and her.Anne needed her diary to express everything an adolescent girl needed to express plus the remarkable and claustrophobic circumstances she was in.
