The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank

Scene Three opens with the Franks and Mrs. Van Dan sitting in the main room, and the narration states none of the people were wearing shoes, why?

Anne and the others in the annex didn't wear shoes so they wouldn't make any unnecessary noise. They couldn't risk being heard downstairs, thus, they had to settle for stockings.
