It is important to note that Anne is going through puberty during her time in the annex. Thus her struggles are those of any teenage girl plus the added stress of her situation. Her diary reflects these changes. Anne feels a disconnect from “the Anne of last year”. She notes her struggles with mother were partly her own immaturity. Anne's diary hence becomes a record of her maturation from girl to young lady who is much more self-aware. We also see the sadness and resignation in Anne's latter entries that holds a self-awareness and maturity that she did not have in her first entries.
