Anne experiences many broken relationships in this story, but certainly her distance from her mother is one that seems a problem.  We can assume that time might have healed all wounds had Anne lived through World War II and not died in a concentration camp.  Many of what appear to be broken relationships are actually simply normal conflicts of an adolescent girl trying to navigate her way into adulthood under what were the most trying of circumstances.
