Anne dreams about her school friend Lies and imagines horrible things that might have happened to her. Lies hence becomes a symbol of both guilt and gratefulness. She feels guilty for not being there herself and grateful for having a family to protect her. THere is also feelings of regret over her grandmother. Anne wishes she could have told her she loved her before they went into hiding.
