Mr. Frank isn't quite as optimistic as he once was..... he's a bit defeated. The fact that Mr. Van Daan is stealing food doesn't help, everyone is hungry and underfed. He even turns on Mrs. Frank in his anger and frustration, and we realize that he is jealous of his wife's relationship with Mr. Van Daan.
