Mr. and Mrs. Van Daan seem to think of themselves as better than the other members who are hiding out together. They do not initially take seriously the conditions from which they are hiding and how serious it would be if they were found. Mrs. Van Daan especially seems to think that she should somehow have special privileges that the others cannot have. She thinks she is superior.
