Not all is well and good between the Franks and the Van Daans. They quarrel over things big and small. The matriarchs of the family have differences over plates and sheets; Anne cannot get along with Mr. Van Daan at all. Peter Van Daan had a fight with his parents when he snatched a book that he was not allowed to read "on the subject of women." Margot was also forbidden to read the book, but she left it alone. When Mr. Van Daan caught Peter with the book, he was sent to bed without dinner.

Mr. Dussel, a Jewish dentist, is the newest member of the group. He moves into the annex in Section Three,
