Anne tells Kitty (her diary) the history of her family: her parents' marriage, her 1929 birth in Frankfurt, and then, "as we are Jewish," their 1933 emigration to Holland. The rest of her family suffered under Hitler's pogroms in Germany; some of them managed to emigrate to other countries. Anne has a typical childhood. Anne attends Montessori school up to the 6th grade in Amsterdam. The biggest change comes in 1941, when Anne has to go to the Jewish High School after the summer holidays. The Nazis wanted to segregate Jews from the rest of the population.
