Through her letters, Christopher's mother introduces us to the confused and overwhelmed young woman she was during Christopher's early childhood. The picture we already had in out minds was one of a callous and uncaring woman, a woman who deserted her child and husband. Because of her letters, we see that there was more to it, that she felt she did the best thing for Christopher by leaving him with the better equipped parent, that in leaving with Roger she had found something she was looking for. She wasn't as cold and callous as we had originally believed.
