Making the decision to go to his mother's creates all sorts of new experiences for Christopher. He conquers his fear of new places when he takes the train to London, he explains what he's doing to the policeman in order that he might help him, he hides from the policeman that tries to return him to his father, and once he arrive in London, Christopher watches other people for cues and knowledge about what to do next.
