Many of the petty disagreements existed long before Re. Hale arrived to Salem. Proctor and Rev. Parris disliked each other. Parris felt Proctor was trying to undermine his authority and monetary gain. Proctor thought Parris was a charlatan. Putnam coveted other people's land including Giles Corey's.
