The Count of Monte Cristo

When Dante digs the tunnel to Abbe Faria and when he gets rid of the rock in his way to the treasure, could the digging of the Earth symbolize something?

for example to my question; the way Dante gets rid of the dirt in his way to get to the "prize" just as he plans to get rid of all the "dirty" people to get his revenge.

I think you are correct in your supposition. The dirt could also represent all the lies, deceit, and obstacles he must overcome to finally be re-born in the presence of Abbe Faria.
