I think lack of love might be a better theme. Dantès pretty much exiled himself from humanity. All he cared about was revenge. He is hence unable to experience the softer emotions like love which most people live for. Since Dantès was maligned, his whole life was dedicated to vengeance and repaying friends, there was no love in his life.
