Haydee is a free woman, as Monte Cristo purchased her freedom. She had been sold into slavery after her father, Ali Pacha, was betrayed and murdered. After Monte Cristo purchases her freedom, he tells her that she is free to go or stay, note, she is free. Haydee stays with Monte Cristo, and they eventually fall in love.
