Dantes hides out in the tunnel, where he hears that the Abbe is pronounced dead by the prison doctors. They will come pick up the body at ten or eleven o'clock. Dantes thus concocts a plan. He substitutes himself for the dead priest¹s body in the body bag that the doctors provided. He brings a knife with him. He anticipates being buried, after which he will push up the soft earth, and obtain freedom.. In reality, he is tossed into the stormy sea surrounding the Chateau D'If.
