Why does James punch the son of a Black Panther on the school bus? What does this convey about James's confusion about identity and alliances related to race?

James punches him because he's afraid. He finds out the boy's father is a Black Panther, and he believes that they're there to hurt his mom. She was the only white woman.... or man, around.
