The Color of Water

What was McBride's stepfather’s approach to race? How did that guide his life?

I cannot seem to find anwhere in the book that can answer this question.

I just concentrated on Chapters 10-12, looking for a direct reference to his approach on race. I believe your teacher isn't looking for textual evidence though......... I think he/she is looking for inference. I'm going to look further though..... and when I come up with something I'll be back.
