The Color of Water

What is the importance of church/synagogue in the book?

The church seems to have great importance throughout the book, it is greatly revered by both James and Ruth, but the synagogues seem to be shown as cold however grand and fanciful they are.

Ruth was disowned by her family and thus severed from her religion. She found God and solace in the Christian church. Ruth didn't only find God on her journey, she also found acceptance and a family.
