Why was Mama angry at Francisco when he left the car to pick his first pile of cotton?

Francisco had neglected to care for Trampita while he was busy trying to prove he could pick cotton. When Mama returned she was angry because Trampita had cried himself to sleep, soiled his clothing, and broken his milk bottle.
