Why would David has a disconnect with his religios teachings and everyday life? Would it have mattered if he had seen Sophie's toes before he got to know her?

David is an empathetic and sensitive boy to begin with. Although he accepted the teachings of his father and church, he was never comfortable with the hate and paranoia. This sensitivity might have something to do with the fact that David himself was different. His telepathic abilities meant that his nature rebelled against bigotry. Had he not met Sophie, David would have developed in the same way. He was destined to transcend Waknuk and its narrow ideology.
