Why does Chaucer include common people in this trip? What type of change does the inclusion of common people represent in literature?

Chaucer is relying on a medieval tradition of "estates satire," they are collection of stereotypes about people based on what occupation "normal" occupations. This would appeal to the common person at the time as well as powerful institutions like the church.
