what does Chaucer mean when he states "jealous he was, and heeld hire narwe in a cage"? from the miller's tale

Chaucer is referring to the carpenter's jealousy in regard to his new bride. He loved the girl dearly, and because he was so worried that she was "wilde and yong," (he was older), he kept her locked in the house.
